Commit Manitou Springs to a renewable energy future

As concerned citizens, we ask that Manitou take a bold step toward a better future by committing to 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and 100% renewable energy across all sectors by 2050. In doing so, Manitou will join more than 50 other cities nationwide, committing to shifting from dirty fuels to a cleaner, healthier future based on renewable energy.

Our changing climate has already effected Colorado and Manitou, and its effects will become more intense.  Colorado’s average temperature is increasing at about twice the rate of the rest of the country.  Increased heat waves, wildfire, drought, floods, and reduced snowpack (of particular concern for Colorado) have already been the result.

Manitou has been directly effected by the Waldo Canyon fire and the floods which have followed. 2018 will be remembered in Manitou as a time of drought, and at the same time floods and destructive hail.

Manitou is a leader in the Pikes Peak region on environmental and renewable energy issues.  More than a decade ago, Manitou set a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% from 2005 levels by 2020, and that all new development will be carbon neutral by 2030.  The city has undertaken greenhouse inventories in 2005, 2010 and 2017.

Manitou aready produces 120% of its municipal buildings' electrical needs via solar and micro hydro.  The real strength of Manitou is its progressive people, who are dynamically involved in virtually all environmental issues that affects the community.

We are proud and grateful for the leadership of past city management in tackling climate challenges and are particularly proud of Mayor Jaray for actively pursuing this challenge. By committing to 100% renewable energy, Manitou will establish us as leaders in climate action and accelerate the change we need.
