After more than a year of secretive backroom dealing, the text of Trump’s NAFTA deal is finally out.

What’s in the rebranded U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement? A shameless handout to Chevron and ExxonMobil, terms that encourage the outsourcing of jobs and pollution, a weak environmental chapter that would fail to protect our air, water, and wildlife, and rules that promote fracked-gas exports and pipelines.

Trump’s NAFTA even includes new rules that could prolong Trump’s polluting legacy for years after he leaves office.

What’s NOT in the deal? There’s not a single mention of climate change, even after more than two decades of corporate polluters outsourcing their climate pollution under NAFTA.

The newly unveiled text of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement shows that it would continue the outsourcing of jobs and pollution under NAFTA. The complete omission of any mention of climate change or any effort to eliminate NAFTA’s incentives to outsource climate pollution should make this trade deal a non-starter. The deal even includes new rules that could prolong Trump’s polluting legacy for years after he leaves office.

The deal’s environmental chapter is full of weak terms that would fail to protect our air, water, and wildlife -- subject to an old, failed enforcement system. The deal even rolls back environmental standards included in the last four U.S. trade deals to reinforce Multilateral Environmental Agreements. Another rule -- left intact from NAFTA -- would continue to promote fracked-gas exports and pipelines.

While this deal curtails corporate rights granted by the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) system, it then grants those same egregious rights to the worst offenders -- oil and gas corporations. These corporate polluters -- some of the biggest in history -- have repeatedly and successfully used these broad rights to undermine critical environmental protections. We can expect that to continue if this trade deal is approved. Meanwhile, a chapter with binding rules for the U.S. regulatory process could give corporations a new, additional way to delay or weaken environmental regulations: by challenging regulatory proposals while they’re being formed and asking for existing regulations to be “repealed.”

Replacing NAFTA is long overdue, but we shouldn’t replace it with a trade deal that would perpetuate NAFTA’s damage to our communities. Please speak out against this toxic trade deal.
