Help Make Gainesville a 100% Clean Energy City!

Gainesville can soon become Florida's next 100% Clean Energy for All city - with your help! You can help encourage the City Commission to act now by sending a message to the mayor and commissioners to ask Gainesville to make a commitment for 100% clean energy and clean transportation.

The Commission will vote at its next meeting, Thursday October 18, on a resolution to commit to a goal for 100% clean energy for the entire Gainesville community by 2045, as well as clean, zero emission electric transit and city fleet vehicles. This is exactly the action we need to take now to fight climate change - while we still can. Gainesville needs to plan to achieve net zero community-wide greenhouse gas emissions in all energy sectors (electricity, transportation, and buildings) by 2045 at the latest or sooner if at all feasible.

Please ask the Gainesville City Commission to join Orlando, St. Petersburg, Largo and Sarasota as Florida cities now moving to a 100% clean energy future.

I've heard that the Commission will consider a new resolution on Thursday, October 18, that will commit the city to a goal of 100% clean, renewable energy by 2045. I also understand that it would move the city to make all of its cars and transit buses electric by 2045.

As a local resident, I believe that this is exactly the kind of action that we need to take right now in Gainesville.

As the International Panel on Climate Change's recent report suggests, we must transition to a 100% clean energy economy to combat and build resilience to climate change. Just this week, Hurricane Michael's destructive force showed Floridians firsthand how devastating storms can be when strengthened by warmer ocean temperatures and sea level rise.

Michael's impact on Florida communities has been profound, destroying homes in the Florida Panhandle and leaving more than 1.1 million households without electricity. This makes it clear -- we don't have time to wait to tackle climate change. The City needs to start working with the people of Gainesville now to plan for our clean energy future.

As you get ready for this Thursday's meeting, I want you to know you have my support for taking this bold action, to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by using 100% renewable energy throughout the entire community to power electricity, transportation, and buildings by 2045 at the latest.

I look forward to a future here where the air gets cleaner and the power bills get lower, where we grow new clean energy jobs that pay enough to support a family, all while fighting climate change. Every family deserves the benefits of clean electricity, zero emission electric transportation and energy efficient homes and workplaces.

Please pass a strong resolution for 100% clean energy and transportation at Thursday's Commission meeting. Thanks for your leadership -- I'll always be grateful.
