Don't let Trump's EPA allow more dirty, climate-disrupting coal plants!

Trump’s EPA is proposing to make it easier to build more coal-fired power plants, but we have a chance to stop them. Under the Obama administration, millions of people just like you demanded EPA set limits on how much carbon pollution new coal plants could dump into the atmosphere. Because of efforts like this -- as well as the poor economics and strong grassroots opposition to new coal plants -- there are almost no proposed coal-fired power plants in the U.S. right now.

At a time when we see the effects of climate change affecting our communities, we must stand up to the Trump administration and support limits of how much carbon pollution they can spew in our atmosphere. You can submit your comment directly to the EPA, but it will be even more effective if you tell EPA how climate change and other pollution affects you personally and your community.

Do not roll back the new source performance standards for coal-fired power plants. We cannot prevent catastrophic climate change unless real limits are placed on the amount of carbon pollution that can be emitted by these power plants. With several existing technological options available for limiting carbon pollution at these plants to no more than 1,400 lbs-per-megawatt-hour, we should not permit any new power plants that do not meet this standard if they wish to use coal as a fuel source. The newest National Climate Assessment says we have very limited time to act on climate change, and that impacts to human health and safety are imminent. We are already seeing stronger hurricanes, devastating wildfires, droughts, flooding, and other impacts on our communities across the US. We can not take a step backwards on climate. Simply put, the Clean Air Act requires EPA to limit carbon pollution from coal-fired power plants and protect the public health and welfare. EPA’s proposal to roll back the carbon pollution standards falls short of this requirement. It is therefore unlawful, and EPA must withdraw the proposal and instead commit to fully enforcing and strengthening the standards that are currently in place.
