It's time to leave dirty fuels behind

2019 is a critical year for Wisconsin and Minnesota as our states work together to grow renewable energy and reduce pollution from fossil fuels.

Dairyland Power in Wisconsin and Minnesota Power in Minnesota, are asking regulators for permission to build a new fracked gas power plant in northern Wisconsin. Fracked gas is a danger to our health and environment across its entire life cycle, and is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. The science is very clear that in order to mitigate the worst effects of climate change, we need to be moving towards 100% clean energy, not investing in more fossil fuels.

At this very moment, Wisconsin is accepting public comments about this proposed fracked gas plant, and your voice is critical. Send in a comment against this gas plant and in support of clean energy.

I am writing today to urge the Wisconsin Public Service Commission to reject the proposed Nemadji Trail Energy Center (NTEC), for several reasons. First, the proposed plant is nowhere near as clean as the application suggests. While coal power may be more visibly dirty than fracked gas, generating power by burning fracked gas still harm people’s health, causes asthma rates to go up, increases medical costs, and puts Wisconsin’s natural beauty at risk. Also, the process of producing fracked gas is just as bad, if not worse. Fracked gas has a negative impact on air and water quality in the regions where it is collected, and frequently creates vibrations in the earth’s crust, which in turn causes earthquakes. So far, fracked gas has contaminated the drinking water of hundreds of thousands of Americans, and has devastated thousands of square miles of landscapes that are important to people and/or wildlife. Contamination of water also has and can kill fish, horses, cats, dogs, and birds. Second, by burning fracked gas, NTEC would contribute to the climate crisis on the horizon, which could impact people across Wisconsin and around the world. The climate-disrupting impacts of methane and carbon dioxide emitted by extraction, transport and burning clearly point to the urgent need to keep fossil fuels in the ground; in particular, methane released through extraction and transport of fracked gas is 86 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2 over a 20-year time frame. Finally, this project doesn't even make sense from a financial perspective. The cost of renewable energy from wind and solar power has continued to drop over the past decade, to the point that it now makes both financial and environmental sense for our state to move on from fossil fuels and instead develop clean energy technologies, creating more sustainable jobs for our citizens. As a result, many utilities, in Wisconsin and elsewhere, are making major investments in new wind and solar installations. The NTEC fracked gas plant is a harmful and unnecessary project, which will contribute to our global climate crisis and contaminate local water supplies and air quality. If approved, it will do significant damage to local air quality and water supplies, and contribute to our global climate crisis that puts Wisconsin at risk along with the rest of the world. I urge you to stop all continued investment in dirty fossil fuels, and to reject this proposal. Sincerely,
