Protect our ecosystems and the species that rely on them -- demand a strong National Biodiversity Strategy!

Our planet and nation are facing an alarming and catastrophic biodiversity crisis, largely driven by human actions. Habitat loss, overexploitation of wildlife, climate change, invasive species, and pollution are the five major drivers of the loss of biodiversity.

Scientists around the world have warned that one million species are at risk of extinction, and in North America alone, nearly 3 billion birds have disappeared since 1970. This is a devastating loss.

Urge your Representative to co-sponsor Rep. Neguse’s resolution (H.Res. 69) calling for a national strategy to address the biodiversity crisis!

A national biodiversity strategy would elevate the biodiversity crisis to the level that it should be, and encompass a comprehensive “whole-of-government” approach to tackling species extinction. This strategy should include enforcing and fully funding the Endangered Species Act, undoing Trump rollbacks to the Endangered Species Act and protection of endangered species such as gray wolves, promoting new laws and policies to protect biodiversity and turn back the extinction crisis, permanently protecting 30% of our nation’s remaining intact lands and waters by 2030, and coordination among all levels of government, Tribes and landowners to halt the biodiversity crisis.

I am writing to urge you to become a cosponsor of H.Res.69. This resolution calls on the federal government to establish a National Biodiversity Strategy to mobilize a strong national response to tackling the biodiversity crisis, which threatens one million species with extinction in the coming decades. Our planet and nation are facing an unprecedented biodiversity crisis, highlighted by several recent scientific reports. The loss of biodiversity presents a direct threat to the security, health, and well-being of people in the United States. Just last year, the World Economic Forum released a report finding that biodiversity loss is one of the top threats to the global economy. While multiple federal agencies are already tasked with protecting and conserving biodiversity in the U.S., there is no coordinating policy to maximize these efforts or facilitate collaboration among them. H.Res.69 details policy recommendations of National Biodiversity Strategy to address the drivers of biodiversity loss, secure and restore critical ecosystem services, promote social equity and justice, and reestablish the nation as a global leader in biodiversity conservation. The Strategy would direct federal agencies to work collaboratively to pursue actions within existing laws and policies and encourage innovation for developing new ones to protect biodiversity. It would also promote sustainable job creation by funding existing programs that invest in conservation, invasive species control, renewable energy, and infrastructure that improves connectivity for wildlife. The biodiversity crisis presents an historic moment for conservation and our country. A National Biodiversity Strategy sets us on the right path. I urge you to become a cosponsor of this important measure.
