Demand Automakers Stop Fueling the Climate Crisis

The transportation sector is currently the largest source of climate-disrupting pollution in the United States. Major car manufacturers have made big promises to transition to electric cars and trucks, but now they’re trying to backpedal on their commitments.

Transitioning to electric vehicles can create good union jobs while benefiting the environment, the auto industry, and everyday people. Companies like Toyota, Subaru, GM, Ford, and Honda need to stop blocking progress and make the shift to clean energy – we can’t afford any more health risks and climate pollution.

Dear Kōji Satō, Tomomi Nakamura, Mary Barra, Jim Farley, Carlos Tavares, and Toshihiro Mibe, Transportation is the number one source of climate pollution in the United States. In order to effectively tackle the climate crisis and ensure that everyone can breathe clean air, you must act now to transform our cars and trucks from ones fueled by climate polluting gasoline and diesel to cleaner electric alternatives. You can do this by bringing electric vehicles to market and phasing out polluting models now. That means producing new electric vehicles of all types, advertising to bolster their sales, training your dealers about driving an electric vehicle, and investing in charging infrastructure. We don't need to choose between good jobs and a livable planet. You can prioritize this transition while ensuring good worker safety, benefits, and pay. We urge you to change course away from polluting cars and trucks, move rapidly toward electric vehicles, and put workers front and center. Thank you for doing everything you can to be a part of the solution towards building a healthy, thriving future for everyone.
