Support Offshore Wind in New York and Across the U.S.

This past December, New York’s first offshore wind farm, South Fork Wind, began delivering clean electricity to the grid. With New York City and Long Island relying overwhelmingly on fracked gas to power their grid, this is a momentous step in the transition away from fossil fuels. And while these turbines will be offshore in New York, they'll generate clean energy that will protect our health and climate nationwide.

South Fork Wind took over ten years to develop - that’s not a pace that we can take with the next phase of offshore wind projects if we are serious about addressing the climate crisis. Fossil fuel backed opponents of offshore wind are using every tool they can to delay the permitting and siting of projects. We need Governor Hochul and other state leaders to hear that there is strong support across the country for offshore wind and a transition to clean, renewable energy.

Dear Governor Hochul, Thank you for recently awarding contracts to three offshore wind projects totaling over 4,000MW of clean electricity. These projects are a critical investment in New York communities and will deliver millions of dollars in economic benefits and jobs while protecting public health by enabling us to shift away from fracked gas. The US offshore wind industry is at an important moment. As developers contend with inflation and supply chain issues, New York is also facing the challenge of meeting our climate goals which rely on a renewable electric grid. This last year, New Yorkers across the state were choked with wildfire smoke, had their homes flooded, and contended with record heat. We cannot meet our climate goals without rapidly scaling up our offshore wind industry. This is also an important public health issue. Many of our communities, particularly disadvantaged communities, bear the burden of toxic pollutants from gas-fired power plants. Delays in building renewable energy keep our state reliant on these plants and New Yorkers suffering from health impacts like asthma. Finally, offshore wind is a critical opportunity to boost our economy and protect ratepayers. Our reliance on fracked gas leaves customers subject to the volatility of fossil fuels. Offshore wind will keep prices predictable and affordable. Being an early leader on this will also ensure that we are bringing the port infrastructure and supply chain investments to our state - providing good family-supporting jobs to thousands of New Yorkers. Delays in getting offshore wind built put our public health, climate, and economy at risk. I encourage you to direct agencies to expedite the development, contracting, and permitting of responsibly sited offshore wind projects.
