Protect the Federal Energy Efficiency Standards That Save Us Money!

In the spring, the federal government adopted a slew of new energy-saving measures including updated standards for household appliances and the most energy-efficient national building codes ever for new homes. These new building codes and standards will save homeowners and renters alike hundreds of dollars on utility bills and other energy costs.

Unfortunately, the American Gas Association, the National Association of Home Builders, and other lobby groups have identified these energy efficiency regulations as their top target to dismantle. They’ve pressured House Republicans to roll back many of these measures and challenged other ones in court.

Tell Congress to ignore these special interest groups and protect the energy-saving measures that benefit our climate and our pocketbooks.

I am writing to urge you to oppose any effort to undermine essential energy efficiency standards that benefit consumers and the environment.

Energy efficiency standards for appliances are proven to cut annual consumer costs by an average of $500 and are projected to save $2 trillion in energy costs by 2030. These standards also support over 2.2 million American jobs, primarily in small businesses nationwide; enhance grid reliability and improve public health; and provide substantial benefits to low-income households disproportionately affected by high energy expenses.

Most of the standards have strong support from major appliance manufacturers, who already produce models that meet or exceed these requirements. Given this, manufacturers can make these performance improvements without significant price increases, ensuring cost-effectiveness and better efficiency for consumers.

By saving energy, these standards will also help reduce the amount of health- and climate-harming pollution from buildings and the power sector. Cutting energy waste will also help make the energy grid more reliable.

Please help protect these important standards and reject any legislation that would roll back energy efficiency of appliances.
