Minnesota's future hinges on the energy choices we make today, and Xcel Energy's Integrated Resource Plan is a pivotal moment. While the utility is planning for more wind, solar, and battery storage by 2030, it also plans to add over 2,200 megawatts of “natural” gas (AKA methane gas), by building new gas plants.

Let’s be clear, we cannot build new fossil fuel infrastructure in a climate crisis. The emissions from methane gas could wipe out the benefits of retiring coal plants, and the extraction and burning directly harms our communities.

Xcel’s plan is coming before the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission this fall. Send a personal comment to the PUC sharing why you don’t want new methane gas plants built and asking them to make a decision that protects customers, our climate, and holds Xcel accountable.

We urge you to limit methane gas expansion and focus on sustainable alternatives in Xcel Energy's Integrated Resource Plan. While Xcel's plans for wind, solar, and battery storage by 2030 are notable, adding over 2,200 megawatts of "always available resources" (AKA methane gas) contradicts Minnesota's climate goals and poses grave health and financial risks. Methane emissions from gas negate the benefits of retiring coal plants, and gas extraction and burning harms health. Financially, reliance on gas exposes Minnesotans to increasingly volatile prices. Prioritizing energy conservation, distributed clean energy, demand response, and energy storage will provide clean, reliable, and affordable energy, supporting Minnesota's renewable goals and protecting our health, climate, and energy affordability.
