Since being signed into law by President Nixon in 1973, the Endangered Species Act has saved 99% of the species under its protection from extinction, including the bald eagle, humpback whale, California condor, and many others.

We need the Endangered Species Act now more than ever.

We need the President to ensure we have even stronger biodiversity and endangered species protections for years to come.

America has a proud history of coming together to bring species back from the brink of extinction. The challenges facing wildlife and plants today are daunting, but we can build on our nation's conservation legacy by protecting the integrity of the Endangered Species Act, and by fully funding its implementation. I urge you to ensure that national policies to prevent extinction, recover species, and address the biodiversity crisis are even more successful during the next 50 years than they have been in the previous 50 years. We urgently need your administration to enact a whole-of-government approach to the biodiversity crisis, through the creation of a National Biodiversity Strategy. We need a National Biodiversity Strategy to articulate the nation's commitment to stemming the biodiversity crisis at home and abroad. This strategy would direct federal agencies to pursue actions within existing laws and policies and promote innovation for developing new tools to protect biodiversity. It would also provide governments, corporations, and non-profits with a roadmap for actions needed to address the major causes of the biodiversity crisis. In addition, the Endangered Species Act must be fully funded to boost the recovery of endangered species. The Department of the Interior should support an increase to well over $800 million for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's endangered species conservation programs.
