Tell Forsyth County Officials: Say No to the Dirty Southeast Supply Enhancement Project!

A Texas-based company wants to build another dirty, dangerous pipeline right next to their existing, aging pipes. Williams Company, who owns Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Company, LLC (Transco) recently asked Federal regulators to approve a 42-inch pipeline that would transport methane gas from Virginia to North Carolina and beyond.

This project, called the Southeast Supply Enhancement Project (SSEP), would transport even more methane gas than the defeated Atlantic Coast Pipeline. We won that fight because everyday North Carolinians stood up and said ‘No.’ And thousands of people have spoken up against this project as well. The more people learn about this, the more they speak up! Now is the time to make sure your voice is heard to protect our state against another methane pipeline!

This project would inhibit our transition to a clean energy future, and put already overburdened environmental justice communities at risk.

Dear County Commissioner, North Carolina has a statewide greenhouse gas emissions reduction target set by Governor Roy Cooper in 2022. If built, Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Company’s (“Transco”) proposed Southeast Supply Enhancement Project (“SSEP”) could represent more than a quarter of the state’s net emissions across all sectors by 2030. This would severely hinder the statute’s ultimate goal of carbon neutrality by the year 2050. This massive increase in capacity, and thus in direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, must not be built if we are to do our part to stop climate change from accelerating and to meet our carbon neutrality goals. In addition, Transco has not done its due diligence to assess the dangers of co-locating multiple large-diameter, high-pressure pipelines, and Transco is worse than other gas transmission operators in fatalities, cost per incident, and releases per incident, according to watchdog group Pipeline Safety Trust (PST). Further, most of the causes of Transco’s incidents are what PST considers to be “direct,” meaning the operator was in control of the main cause of the incident (e.g. equipment failure, material failure of pipe or weld, incorrect operation). We need a resolution opposing this methane pipeline now, to show our state and federal leaders where we as a community stand on this.
