Stop MAGA's attack on the Arctic Refuge

MAGA wants to lease the Arctic Refuge to oil and gas developers in order to pay for more, bigger tax cuts for billionaires. Besides being a terrible idea from a dollars-and-cents perspective, it's a huge threat to the wildlife and people who depend on the Refuge to simply exist. The Gwich'in people depend on reliable and robust caribou migrations to live, and without an intact, unindustrialized Arctic Refuge, those caribou are at risk. The Arctic Refuge is too important to auction off at discount rates so that the wealthy can save a few dollars on their taxes. We need you to tell your Representative to stop this sham and protect the Arctic Refuge and all of its natural wonders.

Hello, As Congress prepares the Budget Bill in 2025, it's important that you stay grounded in reality. Requiring leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is both bad business and bad policy. In both 2020 and 2025, lease sales were held for tracts in the Refuge and the results were dismal from a revenue perspective, with the state of Alaska's own public corporation leasing a few tracts in the first sale and no one leasing any in the second. Instead of the billions promised, the first lease sale generated 13 millions dollars and the second cost the federal government money. The reality is that large companies capable of development want nothing to do with drilling in the Refuge, leaving only small, risky operators as potential leasees. At the same time, the Arctic Refuge is one of the last places in the Arctic untouched by major industrial development. It is vital to the Porcupine Caribour herd and dwindling species like Polar Bears and Musk Ox. The Gwich'in people have built their villages along the migration route of the porcupine herd all the way into Canada and rely on it for the vast majority of their food. Without its robust size and reliable migration, entire villages may need to be abandoned. Do not fall for the ruse that the Arctic Refuge will provide a huge offset for tax breaks. It won't. Instead, requiring more leasing in the Refuge will only endanger one of the last truly wild places in North America and disrupt subsistence living for thousands of Gwich'in people in Alaska. Do not support requiring more leasing in the refuge.
