Cleaner Vehicles in Buffalo Means Cleaner Air for Buffalo

In October 2023, the New York City Council voted 47-0 in favor of the Zero Emission Vehicles for NYC Bill, also known as ZEV4NYC. Now, because of ZEV4NYC, the city’s fleet is ushering in a new era of transportation in NYC, as they leave behind dirty internal combustion engines in favor of sustainable zero-emissions vehicles. The Sierra Club Niagara Group has modeled a thirteen page ordinance for our own city based upon the NYC Bill that we think will help Buffalo transition to a cleaner, healthier, more cost-effective future.

Mayor Scanlon and Members of the Buffalo City Common Council, I am writing to express my support for the ZEV4Buffalo ordinance. Non-electric vehicle exhausts contain harmful pollutants which cause an estimated 53,000 premature deaths in the United States annually. The transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in New York State. Vehicle electrification is one of the best ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The City of Buffalo recognizes and supports the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act which calls for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 and 85% by 2050 below 1990 levels. Transformation of the City of Buffalo’s fleet of vehicles to zero-emission vehicles will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and harmful pollutants. Western New York is also a prominent national center for the auto industry and its innovative and job-producing manufacturing of zero-emission electric vehicles. In October 2023, the New York City Council voted 47-0 in favor of the Zero Emission Vehicles for the NYC Bill. The NYC Bill is currently ushering in a changeover from the NYC fleet of internal combustion engine vehicles (ICE) to zero emission vehicles (ZEV). The Sierra Club Niagara Group has modeled a thirteen page ordinance for our own city based upon the NYC Bill. I urge the City of Buffalo to advance this ordinance and cut tail-pipe pollution as quickly as possible. Thank you for your consideration,
