Michigan wouldn't be Michigan without a healthy Great Lakes. Access to fresh water, economic opportunity, and recreation has drawn generations of Michiganders to the state. Nothing could be more essential to Michigan's future than preserving the Great Lakes.

But a plan to enclose Enbridge's 72-year-old Line 5 pipeline in a tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac would extend the threat that this aging pipeline poses to the Great Lakes.

Fortunately, there's still time to act to stop this dangerous plan. Governor Whitmer and her appointed Director of the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) can reject the clean water permit that would be required for tunnel construction to move forward.

I urge you to protect Michigan's natural treasure by directing the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to deny the permit for Enbridge's proposed Line 5 tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac. The Great Lakes provide drinking water for millions, fuel a $20 billion tourism industry, and sustain critical ecosystems. Building a tunnel is no solution to the threat of this 72-year-old pipeline. Construction would destroy wetlands, disrupt aquatic habitats, and perpetuate our reliance on fossil fuels during a critical time for climate action. Worse, the tunnel poses risks of explosion from natural gas liquids and shifts financial liability to Michigan taxpayers for 100 years. Enbridge's history of pipeline failures underscores the urgency of denying this project. You are responsible for ensuring that Michigan prioritizes water quality, ecosystem health, and a sustainable future. Please use your leadership to demand a comprehensive, independent examination of the tunnel's risks—and act decisively to protect our Great Lakes by denying the permit.
