Congress Must Fight for Trade Deals that Protect People and the Planet

Decades of bad trade policy have led to a decline in American manufacturing, the outsourcing of thousands of good-paying American jobs, and a huge increase in global emissions.

We need a new model for trade that propels us into the future — bolstering environmental protections, providing good-paying green jobs, and ensuring sustainable supply chains.

As the Trump Administration negotiates with other countries on new trade deals, this is our opportunity to ensure that any deals protect people AND the planet! Tell your elected officials in Congress to fight for the right to shape, review, and approve Trump’s trade deals and ensure any new or revised deals prioritize a healthy environment and good jobs at home and abroad.

The Trump Administration is pursuing backroom deals that prioritize corporations and polluters at the expense of workers and communities. Congress needs to assert its oversight role to ensure that the United States does not enter into new agreements that exacerbate pollution, hurt our economy, and lead to the further outsourcing of American jobs. Congress can influence trade deals if it asserts its role and demands transparency. The United States was able to secure stronger labor provisions in the United States-Canada-Mexico Agreement (USMCA) in 2019 thanks to pressure from members of Congress. Now more than ever, our elected leaders need to stand up for their constituents to ensure trade deals benefit American communities and workers. Strong Congressional advocacy can shape trade deals to ensure they are pro-worker and pro-environment. While the Trump Administration hastily negotiates new trade deals and revisits existing agreements, we should push for specific major changes to the status quo to ensure we secure good green jobs and clean air and water at home, limit pollution abroad, and develop resilient clean supply chains. As a constituent, I urge you to fight for an active Congressional role in any upcoming trade negotiations, and to clearly advocate for deals that prioritize people and the planet. Thank you,
