Thanks to the incredible engagement of Marion County residents and community leaders, AES Indiana was on track to make significant progress in transitioning away from fossil fuels; with their Petersburg Super Polluter Coal Plant set to end coal burning by 2026 and a goal of tripling their renewable energy portfolio by 2027.
Unfortunately, AES recently announced plans to build a gas plant to serve an unnamed large scale energy user which could drive up our electric prices even higher, and contribute to local air pollution. While this new energy customer hasn't been named, there is a proposed 468-acre data center in Indy's Franklin Township.
Data centers are notorious energy and water hogs. Indy was in the news last month for ranking 21st out of 228 urban areas for worst air quality in the American Lung Association’s State of the Air Report.
Take Action: Tell AES it shouldn't back away from its climate commitments or burden customers with a costly new power plant for a potential data center!
