Protect our public lands from Trump’s budget cuts: save the Land and Water Conservation Fund

President Trump just flip-flopped on his own conservation agenda. During his first term, he signed the Great American Outdoors Act which permanently authorized and funded one of our most powerful conservation tools, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and provided funding to address the maintenance backlog of projects piling up across our public lands

Now the President is using his FY26 budget process to slash billions of dollars from our parks, forests, refuges, and public lands and our opportunities to explore and enjoy them.

Tell Congress to reject these cuts, fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund, our National Parks, forests, refuges, and other public lands. Stand up for outdoor access and protect what connects us.

I’m writing to urge you to reject President Trump’s FY26 budget proposal and protect funding for the parks, forests, refuges, trails, other public lands, and community programs that make outdoor access possible and meaningful for families, veterans, youth, and All Americans across this country. The budget includes more than billions in cuts to core programs that support outdoor recreation, public access, and quality of life. That includes over a billion in cuts to the Department of the Interior {National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service} and U.S. Forest Service, in cuts threatening the maintenance, staffing, and visitor services that keep our most iconic spaces open and safe. It also walks back the Great America Outdoors Act that was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and signed by President Trump in 2020, during his first term. The legislation permanently authorized and funded the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) at $900 million annually. The president’s budget proposal would divert $387 million from LWCF — which has supported everything from ballfields and boat ramps to historic battlefields and national parks in every state, funded with revenue from oil and gas production, not taxpayer dollars. These cuts would impact local parks, forests, community trails, and youth engagement programs that strengthen neighborhoods and build lasting connections to the outdoors. These aren’t just line items; they are real investments in people and places. Outdoor recreation generates over $1 trillion in annual economic output and supports more than 5 million jobs. These programs are the backbone of many local economies and contribute to public health by reducing chronic disease, improving mental health, and creating safe, affordable spaces for people to gather and stay active. Every $1 invested in outdoor access can return nearly $3 in medical savings. Cuts of this scale would roll back decades of bipartisan progress. I urge you to reject this harmful budget and fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund, our National Parks, forests, refuges, trails, and programs that support outdoor access, community health, and the economic benefits that come with strong outdoor infrastructure.
