Sign on to Stop Trump Pipelines in New York

Right now, the NYS Dept of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is accepting public comments on a new fracked gas pipeline called the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Project. Please sign onto Sierra Club’s comment, and remember to add a personal message about why this issue matters to you.

The permit for this pipeline was denied by the DEC in 2019, and the reasons for the denial have not changed . What has changed is that we have a domineering President in the Oval Office who is trying to pressure our state to advance his dirty, fossil-fueled agenda.

The pipeline would harm the delicate and resurgent marine wildlife and ecosystems of the New York Harbor. The gas itself isn't even needed to service downstate utility customers. The gas distribution company, National Grid -- whose customers would pay for the additional capacity -- acknowledged in its recent long-term gas plan filing that its existing gas supply will be sufficient to meet its customers' needs into the 2040's.

I am writing in support of the detailed comments submitted on behalf of Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, Surfrider Foundation, Food and Water Watch, and the NYNJ Baykeeper. The DEC must deny the Water Quality Certification for the NESE pipeline. This project was rightfully denied a permit over 5 years ago, and the same reasons the permit was originally denied haven’t changed today. It seems like the only thing that has changed is the federal administration, and we are suspicious that this pipeline being proposed again is the result of the president’s attempt to push his dirty energy agenda and pressure elected officials. The health of the New York Harbor has improved dramatically in recent decades, but that progress is threatened by this pipeline. The Harbor’s improvement is thanks to incredible advocacy efforts and major investments by NYC, advocacy organizations, and everyday New Yorkers who care about a restored Harbor, but construction of this pipeline could mean that much of that work was in vain. Construction of this pipeline would disturb toxic sediment that would violate water quality standards and release pollutants, including heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins, pesticides and more. Stirring up these dangerous chemicals could significantly harm the aquatic ecosystems that so many people have worked so hard to restore. The best usages of the Harbor depend on increasingly healthy marine wildlife and ecosystems, and impeding those uses is an unacceptable violation. DEC would be abdicating its duties if it reversed its prior science- and law-based denials of this project.
