Tell Congress: Trump’s Weaponization of Government Puts People and Public Lands At Risk

Donald Trump and his MAGA regime are again stoking violence through their hostile takeover of the District of Columbia, turning our government into a weapon against the people while using our public lands as staging grounds for the National Guard and federal law enforcement.

This is part of a power grab to wrest more control and undermine state and local authority. It endangers our freedoms and our futures, and limits our readiness to respond to a climate disaster if our state National Guards are deployed for non-emergency purposes rather than to respond to floods, fires, or hurricanes.

While DC, Los Angeles, and border communities are facing this crisis now, Trump has openly threatened that other cities and states could be next.

Legislation was just introduced in Congress to end Trump’s federalization of the DC police – so let’s make sure our representatives hear from us!

As your constituent, I’m writing to ask you to support the Termination Resolution, HJ Res 115, that Senator Chris Van Hollen and Representatives Jamie Raskin and Eleanor Holmes Norton introduced on August 15. The escalating law enforcement presence in the District of Columbia is dangerous, and it is not something the people of DC want. It threatens our freedoms and our futures, and limits our readiness to respond to a disaster if our state National Guards are deployed for non-emergency purposes rather than to respond to floods, fires, or hurricanes. Using our public lands as staging grounds for the National Guard also puts ecosystems at risk, for something that is also making things more dangerous for people. Senator Van Hollen and Representatives Raskin and Norton’s Termination Resolution utilizes a provision within the Home Rule Act that allows Congress to move quickly to overturn this authoritarian power grab in DC and restore a balance of power. President Trump’s use of the Emergency Resolution is an unjust power grab that sets a dangerous precedent for taking away power from states and cities across the nation and undermines our rights to be represented and our interests considered by the leaders we elect. This has nothing to do with safety in DC or the country as a whole. DC’s residents and elected leaders have not asked for this. Trump has openly stated that DC is just the beginning, and that other cities and states could face the same abuse of power, with their authority being stripped away or their local and state law enforcement being federalized. Please support the Termination Resolution, HJ Res 115, ensure it is taken up for a vote as quickly and urgently as possible, and vote YES to pass it.
