Most people have never heard of an industrial boiler — but they’re everywhere. These machines power manufacturing processes at food plants, paper mills, and factories. The problem? Most industrial boilers still run on methane gas or other dirty fossil fuels, pumping out toxic air pollution and climate-warming emissions.
The good news is that the solutions are here. Clean, zero-emission alternatives like electric boilers, industrial heat pumps, and thermal energy storage are already available — and major companies are beginning to adopt them. These solutions cut pollution, improve efficiency, and protect workers, all while accelerating the clean energy transition.
The toll is not evenly shared. Four in ten boilers are located in disadvantaged communities, and boilers in these areas pollute twice as much as elsewhere. That means low-income communities and communities of color, already overburdened by other pollution sources, bear the brunt of dirty industry. We’re working to change that.
