Defend Environmental Protections to Cut Methane

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is more than 80-times more powerful than carbon-dioxide in the near term, and is responsible for one-third of the climate warming we are experiencing today. Fortunately, thanks to our advocacy, the Biden administration took action to reduce dangerous methane pollution. This was a massive win for our health and climate!

If these environmental protections are implemented, the EPA methane rule will massively cut climate-damaging methane emissions as well as smog-forming and hazardous air pollution from oil and gas leaks, venting, and flaring.

However, the polluters who bought access to Trump are now urging him and his EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to delay these critical protections. Administrator Zeldin is creating loopholes for the Trump Administration's polluter allies at the expense of our health and wellbeing.

We must not let them! The oil and gas industry releases methane and other air pollutants, which impact health by contributing to ground-level ozone that causes and exacerbates childhood asthma, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases as well as releasing hazardous air pollutants such as benzene which can lead to cancer. And air pollution from oil and gas operations risks the health and safety of workers and the communities living closest to extraction.

There's absolutely no reason to delay the current methane rule, a commonsense safeguard that holds oil and gas polluters accountable. Demand the EPA do their job and act today.

As someone deeply concerned about the health of our communities and the future of our climate, I urge the EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to immediately implement the 2024 Methane Rule without further delay. Cutting methane is critical to reducing climate pollution, protecting the air we breathe, securing American energy, and creating jobs. Methane, the primary component of natural gas, is a climate pollutant that is over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide at warming our planet, contributing to roughly one-third of the warming we have already experienced. Its unchecked emissions drive increasingly severe weather events — floods, wildfires and heatwaves — that threaten people across the country. The 2024 methane standards offer commonsense, proven and cost-effective solutions such as leak detection and repairs. Major oil and gas producing-states have already begun implementing and both large and independent producers support methane regulation. Plus, these protections will cost operators just a fraction of their bottom line. These safeguards are not only vital for protecting public health and our climate but also reduce the needless waste of our natural resources. Further, support for reducing oil and gas methane waste and pollution is widespread and bipartisan. Polling has found that more than two-thirds of voters in key oil and gas producing states support efforts to swiftly enact stronger standards on methane pollution from oil and gas development to protect the air we breathe, safeguard the health and well being of our families and climate, and create jobs. It is deeply troubling that Administrator Zeldin chose to delay compliance with these standards, allowing industry polluters to emit even more harmful pollution, and did so without permitting public comment until after the rule was finalized — a clear violation of the law and the principles of transparent government. I call on Administrator Zeldin to prioritize the health and safety of Americans by advancing full implementation of the 2024 methane protections. Our climate, our communities and our future demand nothing less.
