Take Action Now: No Rate Increases for Dirty Coal

Arkansans need to comment and get the word out immediately against SWEPCO's attempt to charge electric customers for investments in dirty coal. In total, SWEPCO wants to raise rates by 24% for residential customers! 📈💰 A portion of this rate increase will pay for modifications to the old, dirty, and expensive Flint Creek Coal Plant!

In March of this year, SWEPCO requested permission from the Arkansas Public Service Commission (APSC) to update its electricity rates for Arkansas customers. We have a window of opportunity to inform the APSC not to allow SWEPCO to raise our rates due to poor coal investments, but instead to tell them we want cheaper, cleaner, and renewable energy readily available to customers in our state.

Dear Arkansas Public Service Commission, I am writing to you in opposition of SWEPCO’s proposal to raise rates to pay for modifications to the Flint Creek coal plant. Coal is the most expensive kind of energy around today, and already costs the people of Arkansas millions of dollars a year through high fuel prices and expensive medical bills. I do not want my hard-earned money to be wasted on the upkeep of an outdated, toxic, and expensive coal plant when there are cheaper and cleaner alternatives available. I do not want my community to continue to be polluted by Flint Creek, which has dumped toxins into our air and water since 1978. I recommend the PSC disallow the proposed $31 million for Flint Creek spending from Arkansas rates. The Commission should instead push SWEPCO to retire Flint Creek as soon as possible, and should not allow the recovery of expenditures at Flint Creek that are not necessary for the plant to operate beyond its retirement date. Our money should not be used to keep this dirty, expensive plant open any longer. Arkansas families deserve 21st-century energy solutions, not 20th-century pollution subsidized by our utility bills. The science is clear, the economics are undeniable, and the moral imperative is urgent. Please protect Arkansas ratepayers and reject this proposal. Thank you for reading my comment.
