The Department of Transportation (DOT) has a responsibility to regulate how far vehicles travel on a gallon of fuel through the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. It’s essential that the U.S.’ fuel economy standards improve gas mileage, save families money, drive down pollution, and protect public health. Trump’s rollback is a giveaway to Big Oil and a harmful demonstration of his corrupt fossil-fuel and polluter-first agenda. Instead, DOT must continue implementing the current standards. Gutting the CAFE program will make cars burn more gas and American families burn more cash. The current standards save drivers thousands of dollars each year by requiring manufacturers to produce more fuel-efficient cars. Weakening them further hurts our economic well-being at a time when families are already burdened by rising costs. The current standards are also necessary to advance the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers in the global market. Fuel economy standards ensure that auto makers have the certainty to invest in advanced manufacturing here in the U.S. Turning the clock on fuel efficiency by years and locking us there would be a failure of your duty to uphold common-sense scientific and technical evidence. The current standards are working by making new cars more efficient, and American families are seeing real savings and benefits. I urge DOT to keep them moving forward.
