I’m writing to urge you to cosponsor the Public Lands in Public Hands Act. Public lands are a cornerstone of our nation -- supporting hunting, fishing, ranching, outdoor recreation, cultural values, small businesses, and local economies. Today, these lands face multiple, overlapping threats - from weakened oversight and reduced staffing, to rollbacks of long-standing protections and efforts to sell off or transfer public lands out of public stewardship. This bill provides a commonsense safeguard to ensure that lands used by the public aren't quietly transferred or sold without congressional approval. These threats affect many types of public lands -- including wildlife refuges, forests, recreation areas, and more – places beloved by locals and visitors alike, not just names on a map. Together, these sites protect wildlife habitat, support hunting and fishing traditions, and provide outdoor access for families, veterans, and youth. When decisions about these lands are made without transparency or public input, communities lose trust and access is put at risk. Protecting public lands shouldn’t be a partisan issue. Americans across the political spectrum love and rely on these places for work, tradition, and recreation. The Public Lands in Public Hands Act ensures transparency and accountability before any major land transfers occur. At a time when trust in government is low, this bill helps restore confidence by keeping decisions about our shared lands in the hands of elected representatives — not rushed or backroom processes.
