The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to postpone stronger pollution standards for new cars, pickup trucks, vans, and delivery vehicles.

At a time when families are already facing high healthcare costs, Trump's EPA is considering weakening standards that its own analysis shows would increase pollution, illness, and premature deaths.

Tailpipe pollution contributes to smog and increases the risk of asthma, heart attacks, strokes, lung cancer, and other serious health problems. Children, older adults, and people who live or spend time near busy roads and freight corridors would face some of the greatest harm!

These standards are within reach with existing, low-cost technologies already used in many vehicles. Automakers have had years to prepare and should focus on delivering cleaner, more affordable vehicles, not weaker rules that shift the costs of pollution onto families and communities.

Dear Administrator Zeldin, I am writing to strongly oppose the EPA's proposal to "delay" the Tier 4 vehicle emissions standards for two years. The current standards reduce nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and other dangerous pollutants from new cars, pickup trucks, vans, and delivery vehicles, while the proposed standards would increase that pollution and undermine protections adopted to reduce smog and improve public health. EPA’s own analysis shows that the proposal would lead to more preventable illnesses and premature deaths. Vehicle pollution is linked to asthma, heart disease, lung cancer, heart attacks, and strokes. The consequences would be especially serious for children, older adults, and people who live, work, attend school, or wait for transit near busy highways and freight corridors. These safeguards are technology-neutral, cost-effective, and achievable with pollution-control equipment already used in many vehicles. Automakers have had ample time to prepare. They should invest in cleaner, more affordable vehicles rather than building more polluting cars that force the public to bear the resulting health and financial costs. Efforts to weaken or postpone environmental safeguards have also created instability for manufacturers, workers, and businesses that have invested in cleaner vehicle technology. Weakening the standards would reward backsliding and create further uncertainty rather than maintaining a clear and consistent standard. Families and communities should not have to endure avoidable toxic pollution just so automakers can delay meeting feasible requirements. EPA should protect public health and hold manufacturers accountable for delivering cleaner vehicles on schedule. I urge EPA to withdraw the proposal to scrap the current standards and instead to fully implement the Tier 4 vehicle emissions standards according to the existing timeline. Thank you.
