The Trump administration recently issued its latest illegal "emergency energy order" to require coal burning units at Indiana's Shahfer and Culley coal plants to continue operating despite the fact they were supposed to retire -- and Hoosiers were supposed to stop paying for them -- in December 2025. This is the third time the Trump Administration has issued these unneeded orders but this time is particularly bad.
Recently, both of the utilities that own these plants made it clear why these orders and unneeded, expensive, and fail to provide any benefit to Hoosiers. Centerpoint, the utility that owns Culley, sent letters directly to the Trump administration asking for the administration to let them retire the plant rather than force them to keep it operating. Meanwhile, NIPSCO, the Schahfer plant utility owner, reported that not only has the plant not been working, it would likely not be able to operate and provide any electricity for months to come.
That's right, the Trump Administration is making us pay more with an illegal order for a coal plant that is not even able to produce electricity.
This is beyond absurd and it's time for the Governor and Attorney General to take action and stand up for Hoosiers.
Governor Braun and AG Rokita claim to be concerned about rising utility costs, yet they have taken no action to push back against Trump's sham emergency declaration and the costs we Hoosiers will have to pay.
Tell Governor Braun and AG Rokita to change course and challenge Trump's illegal orders to help protect Hoosiers from the added costs and pollution from keeping these plants online.
