Every community deserves clean air, clean water, and a real voice in what gets built where they live. This new proposal would increase the automatic approval cost limit from $14.5 million to $30 million, and the "prior notice" cap from $41 million to $86 million. That means much bigger projects, including ones in communities like the one near Las Cruces, New Mexico, could move forward with little to no oversight.

Dear FERC Commissioners, I am writing to oppose the proposed new rules on FERC's Blanket Certificate program under Docket No. RM25-12-001. As it is, there are not enough checks on the impacts of gas pipelines on our communities and the environment. Allowing fossil fuel companies to build more and bigger pipelines and related infrastructure with even less oversight is absurd. Companies must be required to detail the harms their projects would cause, and we - the people - must have an opportunity to comment, as well. And when more companies are permitted to circumvent environmental review and public participation, we are the ones who suffer. And just because a pipeline project is smaller or costs less to install doesn’t mean it isn’t harmful. All pipelines and compressor stations leak methane and other harmful pollutants that impact our health. Smaller pipelines still require massive right-of-ways that fragment our forests, wetlands, and other vital ecosystems. And smaller pipeline projects can still cause massive explosions. Less oversight means there is a higher risk of us living with these impacts and more. The world is moving away from fossil fuels, even under this administration. Every day, there is exciting news about advancements in wind and solar and other energy sources. We don’t need to make it easier for fossil fuel companies, and we don’t need to live with their unregulated impacts. Do not approve these new rules that would expand the blanket certificate program.
