No more handouts for Big Oil!

Docket Number: BLM-2025-0037-0001

In 2024, thanks in part to your comments, the Bureau of Land Management changed its oil and gas leasing program to ensure that oil companies cleaned up their mess and operated as safely as possible. The Trump administration just announced its plan to reinstate old policies and low rates that give handouts to Big Oil.

The new rules get rid of basic, common-sense leasing preference criteria. This means that they will no longer analyze things like other land uses, critical habitat, nearest infrastructure, likelihood of containing oil and gas, or the presence of cultural or historic resources before leasing your public lands to oil and gas companies.

The new rules and regulations proposed create even more barriers for you to weigh in and influence the leasing of your public land.

Under the new rules, we will go back to bonding rates from the 1960s, effectively giving a good deal to oil and gas companies. Even the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) recognizes these changes could significantly delay restoration of these lands. The new rules will eliminate our ability to provide scoping and comments on draft (National Environmental Policy Act) NEPA documents and limit our participation to a 10-day protest period after the lease sale. The BLM suggests that it may skip NEPA analysis altogether at the leasing stage, setting a dangerous precedent!

The BLM should throw this entire package out and keep the current protections in place. These new rules are a disaster for our public lands, and limit our ability to protect them. We need your help to stop these Big Oil giveaways from moving forward!
