Demand Regulators Keep The Ban On Supersonic Flights Over the U.S

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has banned supersonic flight over the U.S. for 50 years! This is a sure protection for everything living under flight paths from the supersonic boom -- that's homes, children, and other sensitive wildlife.

Now the Trump Administration is trying to lift this protection not because the science changed or because the danger disappeared, but because they want to hand corporate interests what they've asked for.

Here's why the supersonic flight ban must stay in place:

The sonic boom from breaking the sound barrier inflicts violent shockwaves that shatter windows, rattle homes, and terrify communities and wildlife with zero warning.
Supersonic flights burn massive amounts of dirty fossil fuels.
They release pollutants including nitrogen oxides (NOx), black carbon, and water vapor directly into the upper atmosphere and cause severe health impacts.
These emissions also destroy the stratospheric ozone layer that shields every living thing on this planet from radiation.
Commercial supersonic travel will carry price tags most Americans will never afford.

Billionaires are pushing to lift this ban, knowing full well the damage it will do to local ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. They will not be the ones breathing the pollution or losing sleep to sonic booms. Ordinary communities would gain nothing from this policy. We would only pay for it with our health.

Dear FAA, I oppose the FAA’s proposal to enable supersonic flight over the U.S. The FAA should preserve the longstanding safeguards for our health and environment established by the overland ban. Aircraft are the most carbon-intensive means of travel, and supersonic aircraft are significantly worse. Flying faster than the speed of sound uses an excessive amount of fuel, in part because of the powerful engines needed to break the sound barrier. Supersonic flight will emit nitrogen oxides (NOx), black carbon, and water vapor directly into the stratosphere, where these pollutants would destroy the stratospheric ozone layer. Burning that much more fuel means supersonic planes produce drastically more air and climate pollution. This comes at a time we shouldn’t be dumping massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere; we need to be cutting emissions, not accelerating them. The fuel demands also mean commercial supersonic travel would have exorbitant ticket prices and be available only as a luxury to a small, wealthy segment of the population. Supersonic flight is also a public health risk due to the “sonic boom.” This occurs when an aircraft travels faster than the speed of sound, creating an explosive shock wave that travels for tens of miles on either side of the flight path. That noise has serious impacts on human health and welfare, including mental health, and can cause significant harm to endangered species like the California Condor. Repealing the overland ban would contradict FAA’s own mission to ensure that the aviation system protects our health, reduces the environmental impacts, and advances sustainability. I urge you to reject the proposal to allow supersonic aviation over the U.S. Thank you.
