Protect Families Over Protecting Big Oil & Gas's Bottom Line

Dear Environmental Protection Agency, I am writing to urge the EPA to maintain strong federal methane pollution standards under the 2024 Methane Rule. Nearly 1 in 10 people in the U.S. live in a county with low-producing fossil fuel wells. These high-polluting wells make us sick and release dangerous compounds into our air. Oil and gas infrastructure represents nearly half of total climate-disrupting methane emissions and is primarily owned by large, well-resourced, and highly profitable corporations. Like any company, they must have good business practices that don't harm consumers. Fossil fuel companies must clean up their pollution, and they must do so now. The 2024 EPA Methane Rule requires oil and gas companies to greatly reduce their emissions, including eliminating routine flaring and replacing outdated pumps and process controllers with zero-polluting equipment. The federal standards also establish a program to address emissions from super-emitter events and require operators to regularly find and fix leaky equipment -- including from wells that produce little oil or gas yet emit large quantities of pollution -- and incentivize more comprehensive monitoring via satellite emissions trackers. EPA’s proposal to weaken these critical standards will exacerbate harms to families and communities living closest to oil and gas production, locking in continued, unnecessary exposure to dangerous air pollution for years to come. I urge the EPA to fully maintain the 2024 federal methane pollution standards to protect public health and mitigate the climate crisis. The agency must withdraw this ill-conceived proposal to weaken the rule and instead implement those standards immediately. Thank you for considering my concerns.
