There is a proposal before the Glen Ridge Zoning Board of Adjustment regarding the removal of 56 mature trees along the northern border of the Glen Ridge Country Club to make way for a kiddie pool and playground for the Club’s members. The current zoning for this property requires a 100’ buffer zone between the club’s activities and adjacent residential property owners – the variance would reduce this buffer to 13’ and involve the removal of the 56 trees.
The Zoning board initially postponed a vote on this variance due to local opposition, and has rescheduled the vote for Thursday Dec 12.
Preservation and expansion of our existing tree canopy is an important weapon in the fight against climate change. Each mature tree effectively removes 48 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it in its trunks and roots. Collectively, the 56 trees will remove more than one ton of carbon dioxide each year.
Please take action to preserve this small island of trees in our community by sending emails to the Glen Ridge Country Club and the Glen Ridge Board of Adjustment asking them to deny the variance, save the trees and relocate the children’s play area to another location on the Club’s property that will not result in further loss of beneficial tree canopies.
This proposal to cut down dozens of mature trees would directly impact Glen Ridge, Montclair and Bloomfield residents.
Join us in sending a message to the Glen Ridge Board of Adjustment and Country Club telling them to reject the zoning variance and look into alternative solutions!
