As data centers grow across the country, utilities are getting lots of requests to connect, which means they need to invest a lot in new power plants and transmission lines. Every day, people are subsidizing the build-out of this infrastructure for some of the wealthiest technology corporations in the world. In 2025, electric utilities got data center requests for a whopping 700 GW—that’s roughly 22 times the capacity available in Oklahoma! It’s also a big jump from 477 GW needed in 2023, which was the national electricity demand. The demand is coming from data centers, not everyday people using power in their homes or existing businesses. As a result, electricity bills are increasing for many families, making it harder for everyone to afford their bills, especially for those most in need.
We need our legislators to protect Oklahoma families from subsidizing big tech and accounting for critical resources like energy and water consumed by data centers. Specifically:
- HB2992: would ensure that big tech pays it fairs share and that everyday Oklahomans don't subsidize their massive buildout on their utility bills.
Please contact legislators and tell them to move this forward!
