Thanks to your advocacy, House Bill 1834 has passed the Pennsylvania House of Representatives!
Your voice helped move this issue forward at a critical moment. As large-scale data center development accelerates across Pennsylvania, this bill begins to put important safeguards in place to protect our electric grid, our communities, and ratepayers.
HB 1834 would:
- Require large data centers to procure an increasing share of their electricity from new, in-state clean firm energy resources, starting at 10% in 2027 and rising to 32% by 2035.
- Help limit harmful air pollution by setting conditions on how these facilities operate during grid emergencies.
- Ensure data centers contribute to programs that reduce energy burdens for low-income households.
- Establish protections to prevent costs from being shifted onto residential customers and small businesses.
This is meaningful progress, but the work isn’t done yet.
The bill now heads to the Pennsylvania Senate, where lawmakers must decide whether to advance these protections. Without action, Pennsylvania risks falling behind in managing the rapid growth of energy-intensive data centers.
While HB 1834 is an important first step, more will be needed to fully protect communities, ensure grid reliability, and prevent rising energy costs. Passing HB 1834 keeps that progress moving forward.
