Please Tell Your Elected Officials to Protect the Wetlands from Development

You’ve walked along the Bay and its wetlands. You’ve breathed in its beauty.

But the Bay and the wetlands aren’t just beautiful—they’re essential.

Our wetlands clean the water—removing pollution, heavy metals, and toxins. Shoreline plants and soils store more carbon than even tropical rainforests. And tidal marshes like these absorb the wave energy from storm surges and tidal floods.

But all of this is at risk.

The constant development of new housing and warehouses near the wetlands destroys habitats and threatens the area’s biodiversity. It kills so many animals that depend on the wetlands, which in turn kills the wetlands.

Will they protect wetlands? Or pave them over?

Their choices will shape our entire Bay—and our lives—for decades

Climate change can feel overwhelming. But right now, we actually have power.

This is our chance to protect the Bay, its wildlife, and our communities.

Join us. Speak up. Show our leaders that we care. Together—we can keep the San Francisco Bay alive.

If you agree with us, please send these elected officials a message that expresses your concern with saving the wetlands.Sending your message once will send it to all of them. Please consider adding your own personal text as well.

Thank you!

Dear Council Member/County Supervisor, You know the Bay and its wetlands. You know they are more than scenic open space. Wetlands are critical public infrastructure. They filter pollution from our water, store massive amounts of carbon, and reduce flooding by absorbing storm surge and tidal energy. As climate impacts accelerate, these functions are irreplaceable. Yet continued housing and warehouse development near wetlands is degrading habitat, killing wildlife, and undermining the systems that keep wetlands alive. Once fragmented or filled, these ecosystems do not recover. This is a clear policy choice. Will you protect wetlands that safeguard our communities—or allow them to be slowly paved over? Climate change may feel abstract, but land-use decisions are not. You have the authority, right now, to prevent permanent damage. I urge you to oppose development near Bay wetlands and prioritize long-term public safety, ecological health, and resilience over short-term development pressure. Your decisions will shape the Bay—and our lives—for decades. Thank you. Sincerely,
