Tell the Mayor and City Council to Protect the Del Mar Mesa Preserve

The 900-acre Del Mar Mesa Preserve is home to dozens of vernal pool complexes and endangered and threatened species of plants and animals, many unique to the San Diego region. The Preserve is protected under the City of San Diego's Multiple Species Conservation Plan.

Now Cisterra Development wants to build "The Preserve At Torrey Pines" office park on a site that is surrounded on three sides by the Del Mar Mesa Preserve. This project places the Preserve in danger from illegal use by opening up additional paths, invasive species from landscaping, and soil disturbance from grading. The Preserve  also serves as a critical animal migration corridor for the City and County. Placing this large of a complex into the Preserve can disrupt migration.

The Del Mar Mesa Preserve is a City of San Diego resource-based park, created over twenty-five years through the combined efforts of US Fish and Wildlife, CA Fish and Wildlife, San Diego County, the City of San Diego, environmental groups both large and small, individual developers, property owners who dedicated up to 75% of the land in exchange for density, and hundreds of citizen volunteers, including among many others, Endangered Habitats League, Center for Biological Diversity, Sierra Club, Del Mar Mesa and Carmel Valley Planning Boards and Friends of Los Penasquitos Canyon. The route for SR56 was planned to avoid the future preserve. If we don’t act now, we’ll face irreparable damage to this natural habitat.

On August 5th, you are being asked to approve a Rezone, Community Plan Amendment, Site Development Permit and Planned Development Permit to allow applicant, Preserve at Torrey Highlands, LLC, to construct a 420,000-square-foot office campus directly adjacent to and surrounded on three sides of the Del Mar Mesa Preserve. We urge you to vote NO and reject this poorly sited project. We do not need 4, 5 and 6 story buildings next to a preserve. The 900-acre Del Mar Mesa Preserve is protected under the city's Multiple Species Conservation Plan and home to dozens of vernal pool complexes and endangered and threatened species of plants and animals, many unique to San Diego. The Preserve also serves as a critical animal migration corridor for the City and County. Don't endanger the Del Mar Mesa Preserve - VOTE NO.
