Atascadero: Save your Community Choice Energy!

The Monterey Bay Community Power (MBCP) program serves Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties with Community Choice Energy. The cities of San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay joined MBCP last year in order to take control of their ratepayer dollars and expand consumer choice, reduce utility costs, and invest in renewable energy projects. Those same benefits have inspired cities and counties throughout California to follow suit and pursue community choice energy through approximately 20 CCA agencies, serving over three million customers.

On June 25, Atascadero Councilwoman Susan Funk and Mayor Pro-tem Bourbeau voted YES to agendize a vote to join MBCP; but Mayor Moreno and Councilmembers Fonzi and Newsom wanted to delay.

If this delay is not resolved by the time of the MBCP Board meeting in early August, Atascadero residents will lose their chance for rate reductions and rebates, and will incur an additional cost to re-start the process with MBCP if the city council later decides to join.

The City Council has put the decision to join MBCP back on its July 9 agenda, to vote again after more research. We must fill the room on July 9 with supporters ready to address the Council, and email the Council to urge members Fonzi and Newsom and Mayor Moreno to show leadership, take action, and draft and adopt an Ordinance to join MBCP.

The City Manager has said there would be adequate time to complete all necessary steps to join MBCP if there is a decision and a vote of the Council to do so on July 9. After that, it will be too late.

Atascadero has one last chance this year to join a Community Choice Energy program. When the cities of San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay joined The Monterey Bay Community Power (MBCP) program that serves Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties with Community Choice Energy, they took control of their ratepayer dollars. As a result, they will be expanding consumer choice, reducing utility costs, and investing in renewable energy projects. At your June 25 meeting, you moved the vote for Atascadero to join MBCA to your July 9 meeting. If you do not vote to do so at that meeting, we will lose our chance for rate reductions and rebates, and will incur an additional cost to re-start the process with MBCP if the city council later decides to join. There will be adequate time to complete all necessary steps to join MBCP only if there is a decision and a vote of the Council to do so on July 9. Please give Atascadero the benefits that have inspired cities and counties throughout California to pursue community choice energy through approximately 20 CCA agencies, serving over three million customers. Please show leadership, take action, and draft and adopt an Ordinance to join MBCP.
