Stop PG&E Gouging ALL Californians to Extend Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant

Calling all Californians! Ask your state legislators to stop PG&E gouging Californians to prop up the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant (potentially for 15 more years).

A UC Santa Barbara study recently found that PG&E is overcharging all Californians to extend the aging Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant's operations to 2030, estimated at over $650 million from California taxpayers and over $1.8 billion in exorbitant customer fees. Whether you live in PG&E territory or not, all Californians are paying to keep this aging nuclear plant open while PG&E makes record level profits three years in a row. PG&E CEO Patti Poppe lined her pockets with $19.8 million in 2025, while California’s electric utility providers reported that 1.9 million households had overdue electricity bills.

Now industry is trying to extend the life of Diablo Canyon to 2045, without comprehensive financial analysis of the current costs, let alone the costs of a 15-year extension. Californians cannot afford to subsidize this aging nuclear plant for another 15 years.

As a Californian, I’m increasingly concerned about the cost of extending the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant because PG&E is overcharging my family alongside all California taxpayers and ratepayers. Rising electricity bills are currently harming us, your constituents, and I do not want to subsidize PG&E after their third year of record level profits. Diablo’s life should not be extended to 2045, especially not if the cost of keeping the plant open is too high and falls on Californians instead of PG&E shareholders. Even people outside of PG&E’s service territory are paying to keep Diablo Canyon open. According to a recent UC Santa Barbara study, "The Economics of Diablo Canyon: Maximizing Pollution Reduction While Protecting California Ratepayers and Taxpayers," Californians are on the hook for the costs to extend Diablo Canyon – the estimates add up to around $2.4 billion through 2030. It is time to end all subsidies for this aging plant. Californians can't afford it. The analysis by UC Santa Barbara outlines two key areas where Californians are being overcharged to prop up Diablo Canyon: 1) PG&E is on record saying there is “nothing to guarantee” they will pay back an estimated $658.6 million of the $1.4 billion interest-free loan PG&E received from the State of California. 2) PG&E is charging exorbitant fees to California utility customers, estimated to amount to $1.84 billion from 2027-2030. And all the while, "PG&E has generated three consecutive years of record profits." These charges are just the tip of the iceberg. Based on the 2030 costs estimates, the unexamined cost of extending Diablo Canyon's operations to 2045 forewarn a black hole of rate increases for Californians. Surely we can do better. I am concerned that we are not seeing State representatives demand independent long-term financial analysis of this plant’s cost-effectiveness and necessity for our electricity supply before any decisions are made about a further extension. As your constituent, I ask you, please show me you are pushing back on Diablo Canyon and that you will not allow Californians to bear the massive financial burden of keeping this aging and unneeded plant open.
