Please Establish an Offshore Wind Week in Virginia Beach

Dear Mayor Dyer and Virginia Beach City Council, We as Virginia Beach residents are very excited about offshore wind. It not only provides a clean energy source that helps us confront the climate crisis, but it also brings an exciting new industry to Hampton Roads that employs thousands of our people and brings in lots of local revenue. These potential employees include young people who we want staying in or being attracted to our region, along with the many veterans in our area transitioning to new employment. As you know (because you are speaking at it), later in April, Virginia Beach will be in the spotlight as the City hosts a huge international offshore wind conference at its convention center. Hundreds of business representatives from all over the world will attend and we want each of them to know that Virginia Beach is a welcoming community for all that offshore wind promises. What better way to do that than with you, the Mayor, along with the City Council, proclaiming Offshore Wind Week in Virginia Beach April 28-May 1, 2025. Virginia is a national OSW leader with many accomplishments thus far: 1) Dominion Energy is on track with the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project - coming online with its 2.6 GW of wind power by the end of 2026, 2) LS Greenlink setting up shop in Chesapeake with the nation’s first and largest cable manufacturing facility, 3) the Port of Virginia investing millions of dollars in the port upgrades, and 4) so much more. Let’s add community support to the list and demonstrate that support to the international community that will be in Virginia Beach that week!
