Tell Congress Across the Northwest: Stand up for salmon, orca, and more!

Salmon FY2027 (MC).png

Thanks to the leadership of Washington, Oregon, and four lower Columbia River Treaty Tribes (altogether known as the Six Sovereigns), and a recent court victory, salmon recovery in the Northwest is moving forward, even as the Trump Administration undermines it. Trump's budget proposal for 2027 once again makes significant reductions for salmon, steelhead and watershed investments. Now we need Congress to continue their work fixing Trump's damage and secure the necessary federal funding to support the Six Sovereigns' recommendations for critical salmon investments across the west coast and the Columbia Basin in 2027.

These proposed investments continue and build on the strong level of funding secured for 2026 due to the good work of Senator Murray and other members of the Northwest congressional delegation. We need our congressmembers to continue this important funding for 2027, and block attempts from opposition forces to undermine the recent court decision and salmon recovery overall.

Please take a moment now to urge your U.S. Representatives and Senators to back the 2027 budget proposal for our salmon, steelhead, and other native fish that are vital to the environment, cultural identity, and economy of the Pacific Northwest. These fish are critical for our endangered orca, and are integral to the culture, religion, and lifeways of Northwest Tribes.

Dear Congressmember, Salmon and steelhead are essential to our Northwest environment and economy. For millennia they have sustained Tribal Nations of the Columbia Basin and are integral to their cultural practices, religion and lifeways. Restoring abundant salmon runs are important for our sport, commercial, and tribal fishing communities and economies as well as our starving orca. We appreciate the good work that you and other members of the Northwest congressional did in securing appropriations last year for continued investments in salmon and steelhead recovery. The Six Sovereigns Columbia Basin Restoration Initiative still provides the comprehensive plan for moving forward and we can continue to make progress despite the increased challenges of the Trump Administration unilaterally withdrawing from the Columbia Basin Salmon Agreement. We urge you to support congressional appropriations for Fiscal Year 2027 consistent with the recommendations of the Six Sovereigns. This funding will continue critical investments in salmon habitat, clean water, hatchery upgrades and management to help our beleaguered salmon and steelhead. With many Columbia River salmon populations near historic lows, strong federal investment in restoration efforts is more important than ever. Please support these critical investments for salmon, steelhead and other native fish, and oppose any efforts to undermine salmon recovery. Thank you, Salmon Advocate
