Tell State Legislators: Illinois needs a Clean and Reliable Electricity Grid!

Across the country, consumers, our power grid, and our climate are facing unprecedented threats. Our outdated power grid is increasingly at risk from the impacts of climate change and intensifying extreme weather events, and these challenges are exacerbated by the Trump administration’s attacks on clean energy progress. The result: volatile energy markets that increase costs for consumers and threaten reliability.

Clean energy resources like energy efficiency, solar, and battery storage strengthen our power grid, deliver consumers savings, and grow Illinois’ clean energy economy. The Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (SB2473/HB3779) prioritizes commonsense solutions that protect consumers from price volatility, bolster our grid with clean energy resources, and hold utilities and large industrial energy users, like data centers, accountable for achieving a clean and affordable electric grid.

Urge your legislators in the Illinois General Assembly to co-sponsor and vote “yes” on the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (SB2473/HB3779) this spring to protect consumers, our power grid, and our climate.

As your constituent, I ask you to urgently co-sponsor and vote yes on the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (SB2473/HB3779) to protect consumers and strengthen Illinois’ power grid with clean energy resources. Clean energy resources like energy efficiency, solar, and battery storage are the best way to strengthen our power grid, deliver consumers savings, and continue to grow our clean energy economy. Across the country, the power grid, consumers, and our climate are facing unprecedented threats. Power generators and utilities are shifting away from expensive, heavily polluting fossil fuel power plants and prioritizing new investments in reliable, cost-effective clean energy. Unfortunately, the two regional entities that oversee Illinois’ power grid – MISO and PJM – have been slow to prepare our aging power grid for this transformation with new transmission infrastructure. Additionally, PJM has yet to connect the over 20 gigawatts of utility-scale renewable energy and energy storage that are waiting to come online in the ComEd zone alone. As we’ve seen in the last few winter storms, remaining fossil fuel plants have proven to be less reliable, and climate change is contributing to more intense and frequent extreme weather events. These challenges are exacerbated by the Trump administration’s attacks on clean energy progress and the increase in energy-intensive data centers. While regional grid operators have important roles to play in addressing these challenges, the state of Illinois must take action to strengthen our power grid and protect consumers from price volatility. The Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (SB2473/HB3779) prioritizes commonsense solutions that bolster our grid with affordable clean energy resources and holds utilities and large industrial energy users, like data centers, accountable for achieving a clean and affordable electric grid. With a strong and resilient grid, Illinois will then be able to electrify our buildings and transportation sectors by passing the Clean and Equitable Transportation Act and Clean and Healthy Buildings Act, massively accelerating Illinois’ climate, equity, and energy goals. I urge you to co-sponsor and vote yes on the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (SB2473/HB3779) in the spring legislative session. Don’t let the clock run out on our chance to strengthen our power grid and deliver price stability for consumers across Illinois!
