The Illinois General Assembly left Springfield this spring without finalizing a solution to the $770 million transit fiscal cliff that will massively disrupt Illinois' economy, fracture transit service for the millions of riders who use transit daily to get to work, doctor's appointments, and educational opportunities, and threaten the jobs of thousands of transit workers. Without legislative action, transit agencies are now planning for budget cuts that could cut service by 40%, closing entire bus and train routes, leading to longer wait times and increasing traffic and pollution when more people turn to personal vehicles to get around.
The legislature must return to Springfield this summer in a special session to finalize reforms to our transit system and pair them with a dedicated revenue stream so that Illinoisans have access to safe, reliable, and affordable transit for generations to come
