Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a class of synthetic petrochemicals also known as “Forever Chemicals" because of their inability to break down, have been decisively linked to fertility declines, weakened immune systems, developmental interference, cancer, hormone disruption, and other health effects. State testing has revealed they are increasingly accumulating in Massachusetts water, soil, and homes.
As long as we keep making, using, and throwing away things with PFAS, PFAS will keep contaminating us.
The State House is asking the public to weigh in and they need to hear from you about this high-priority bill:
H.2450 / S.1504 An Act to protect Massachusetts public health from PFAS (Rep. Hogan/Sen. Cyr)
- Bans PFAS from selected consumer products for selected products, including food packaging, cookware, furnishings, and children’s products.
- Prevents industrial discharges of PFAS to water.
- Sets up a fund to help test and treat private wells and public water systems for PFAS.
Take Action! Ask the Public Health Committee to support this important bill. Please consider adding a sentence or two about why you want to see action on PFAS and other toxics. Legislators tell us that personalized emails are particularly impactful, and there is value in them hearing from large numbers of people from across the state.
Note: a reminder that submitted testimony may be considered public record!
