Welcome to the NJ Chapter! The Sierra Club is the Nation’s oldest and largest grassroots, volunteer-led environmental organization. Since 1892, we have been dedicated to exploring, enjoying, and protecting the wild places of the earth. In New Jersey, currently the most densely populated state in the country, we’re tackling intersectional environmental issues on both the local and state levels.
The New Jersey Chapter works on a variety of environmental issues across the state, including Conservation, Transportation, Energy, and more. In 2026, our major campaigns and goals include:
- Advancing the responsible and equitable build-out of clean energy, such as offshore wind, solar and battery storage.
- Holding grid operator PJM accountable for mismanagement, and pressing for better governance and clean energy project interconnection.
- Fighting harmful development with Smart Growth solutions and safeguarding air, land, and water protections and conservation efforts.
- Promoting safe and healthy playing fields and passing legislation to prohibit the use of state Green Acres funding to install toxic artificial turf.
- Holding Big Tech accountable by demanding data centers develop sustainably, comply with land and water permits, pay their fair share, bring their own clean energy and not drain our electrical grid.
- Preventing federal rollbacks on wildlife protections, while strengthening New Jersey’s state wildlife protections.
- Ensuring New Jersey continues to move toward resilient infrastructure by incorporating climate change projections for severe weather events, sea level rise, and flooding. Nature-based solutions are key for a resilient New Jersey.
- Incentivizing electric vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure growth in the state by not unfairly taxing EV owners and by making clean transportation accessible to all.
- Connecting folks to nature and making the outdoors accessible for all.
Our volunteers work across a range of issues, and we have issue-based committees that help us achieve these goals. Our committees include:
- Building Electrification
- Conservation
- Communications
- Dark Skies
- Environmental & Social Justice
- Legislative
- Clean Energy
- Transportation
- Political
- Data Center & Warehouse
- Wildlife & Endangered Species
- Student Action Committee (NJ high school and college students)
We rely on people like you to support our work to protect the environment, and we are interested in learning about what environmental issues YOU are most interested in and what skills you have so we can best match you with what campaigns best suit your interests.
