An Outing to Look More Closely

On Sunday, July 28, from 2-4 PM, David von Seggern and Pam Blake will provide an opportunity to learn and practice nature journaling on an easy walk in Winslow Park, Freeport ($3/person entrance fee for those under 62). Dress for the fact that you will be stationary for periods of time and leave pets at home. Participants will be required to sign a waver.Nature Journaling What It MeansI notice, I wonder, and it reminds me ofthese three prompts and your curiosity about plants and animals, birds and bugs, even rocks and landforms, are all you need to create your own nature journal. The few material requirements are a field-worthy journal, writing and/or drawing implements, and something portable to sit on while you journal. Pam uses a folding camp chair, but something as simple as a pad for the ground is fine for those who are limber.Your responses can range from written notes, to pencil drawings or watercolors, to maps or diagrams, to poetry (or any combination of these)whatever helps you engage with the focus of your attention on nature and to remember the experience. You will get some tips on this outing to begin, or improve, this activity yourself.Pam finds it a form of meditation that lets her put aside everyday concerns. You will bring your own purpose. The only truly important things are curiosity and a desire to learn more about the natural world and, perhaps, our place in it.
