Carnivorous Plants I
Date and Time: Saturday,  April 26, 2025, 9 A.M. – 12 Noon
Organized By: Croatan Group
Event Organizer: Ralph Tramontano, rrtramon@gmail.com.

This will be an easy, low-key, nature walk in the southwestern Croatan National Forest. This area is dominted by pocosin bogs and large tracts of well maintained longleaf pine forests and savannas, an ecosystem that once covered millions of acres of the Southeast but has now nearly dissapeared because development, logging and fire suppression. This trip will focus on the rare plants and animlas that are dependent upon these habitats for their survival. This includes at least 13 species of carnivorous plants (the southeast Croatan NF is one of the few remaining strongholds of the venus flytrap) as well as a variety heaths, orchids and other wildflowers rarely seen anywhere else. The area is also home to a large population of the threatened red-cockaded woodpecker. We are holding two such excursions a month apart, as we expect to find different suites of wildflowers in bloom each time (e.g. pitcher plants should be in full bloom at this time). The trip will consist of short, easy walks from various parking sites to sites of interest. No cost, but participants must sign waiver. Participants should wear long pants and substantial footwear (i.e. no flip-flops etc.).

Non-members are welcome! To sign up, contact Ralph Tramontano, rrtramon@gmail.com. We will be meeting on the south end of Pringle Road. Specific instructions on how to get to first site will be given to participants when they sign up.
