Franklin State Forest/Head of the Crow Hike

IMPORTANT: This event takes place in the CENTRAL TIME ZONE - start time is 9:30AM CST / 10:30AM EST. Get ready for a fun and educational hike on the South Cumberland Plateau at the new Head of the Crow State Park/Franklin State Forest complex. We will begin at Franklin's Cross Creek Forest Dynamics Research Area across road 156 from the Fire Tower Parking, where we'll open the morning looking briefly at the oldest continuous forest research area in the region, learn about the complex ecology of the Plateau, and discuss some of the current management challenges affecting State Forests like Franklin. From there we will drive a few miles to Pack Hollow Trailhead off CCC Road at Head of the Crow and hike the 2.85 mile Sherwood Day Loop, which includes a scenic overlook and a natural bridge. This hike stays on the rim and does not have much elevation change (215 feet total, according to Alltrails). Bear in mind that the outing itself is in Central Time Zone. We will meet at the Raceway in Kimball, TN (141 Main St, Kimball, TN 37347) at 9:30 CST/10:30 EST and caravan from there. We should be done by around 3:30 CST/4:30 EST. Make sure that you bring food (we will take a lunch break halfway through), drink, and appropriate footwear/clothing/protection for recreating outside most of the day (sun/temps/light rain/bugs). Contact Davis Mounger at 423.877.4616 for more event information. Contact Dave Hoot at 423.503.9482 for logistical/registration help.
