As part of the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter’s 30x30 conservation campaign, we invite you to join us for a special event exploring some of Los Angeles’ most critical and contested ecological areas: the Inglewood Oil Field and Ballona Wetlands.

This event allows participants to learn about the environmental challenges and opportunities tied to urban open space in Southern California. Learn about the history, current status, and future of these lands, from oil extraction and pollution to wetland restoration and climate resilience. Along the way, you'll hear from local advocates and community leaders working to protect these ecosystems and promote environmental justice.

Attendees have two participation options:

  • Bike Crew: Ride with us along Ballona Creek for a guided cycling tour of the area as we head to the Ballona Discovery Park. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes, but a limited supply of bikes is available for lending from Roots in Motion. The bike tour will take place on the Park to Playa Trail for a 5.6-mile ride each way. All cyclists will ride back to the starting location. A Google Form will be sent via email to sign up for the bike tour, as well as reserve a bicycle if needed.

  • Bus Riders: Ride on a chartered bus that will stop at key locations for walking tours and discussion as we head to the Ballona Discovery Park.

During the Bike and Bus tours, we will ride around the Inglewood Oil Fields and discuss their impacts on the neighboring communities, with stops along the way.

At the Ballona Discovery Park, participants will engage in a guided tour of the Ballona wetlands, led by local conservationists. After the tour, we will enjoy refreshments and light bites, along with an art table where you can reimagine these spaces under 30x30 protections.

Whether you’re a long-time advocate or just starting to learn about local land use, this event is a great way to connect with your community and the movement to conserve 30% of California’s lands and waters by 2030.

Space is limited—please RSVP to reserve your spot!
