Join us for a hike at Beaumont's famous wetland area-Cattail Marsh.

Cattail Marsh includes 900-acres of scenic wetlands along with a boardwalk that features two covered platforms, providing access to incredible views of the wetlands’ abundant wildlife. Originally constructed in 1993 by the Beaumont Public Utilities Department as the final phase of Beaumont's wastewater treatment system, this natural and innovative process has attracted the interest of environmentalists and wildlife professionals from across the state.
Today, Cattail Marsh is a wildlife refuge for a variety of aquatic mammals and more than 300 species of birds annually, including: pelicans, egrets, roseate spoonbills, ducks, ibis, doves and red-winged blackbirds. More than eight miles of gravel levee roads are found within the marsh.
We will meet at 9:00 AM at the Cattail Marsh parking area within Tyrrell Park.  The hike will be about 2.5 miles. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy after the hike. We will supply water.
Can't hike that far? Join us for a stroll down the boardwalk and a sack lunch. There are picnic tables to sit at while others are enjoying the hike.

Plan for your hike:

  • Bring a refillable container with water.  We will provide water at the beginning of the hike, but there will be no refills along the hike.
  • Trails are mostly level, but contain some gravel and rocks, so make sure to wear proper footwear.
  • Wear clothing appropriate for the weather.
  • There is NO SHADE anywhere along the route.  Make sure to wear/bring sunscreen.  If you like, an umbrella can be used for shade as you walk.

Carpool: Carpooling is encouraged. It will reduce your trip expenses, offer companionship, reduce traffic and is good for the environment. Note that Sierra Club leaders will not assign participants to a carpool. Assignment exposes the Club and its leaders to an unacceptable liability risk. The Sierra Club will, on your request, provide rides offered and riders wanted, but does not guarantee riders or rides. It is smart to agree before committing to a carpool how travel expenses to and from home will be shared.
