Join Sierra Club’s State Director Ben Avery for a casual outing exploring historic Port Blakely on Bainbridge Island. Once the world’s largest and most productive mill, the area has evolved into a beautiful park at the inlet of Blakely Harbor. Come enjoy a relaxing afternoon outside and learn about the fascinating history of the mill, world-class ship building, and the restoration efforts.

This walk is very approachable for people of all ages and mobility levels. Families are welcome. The walk is just over 2 miles out and back. It’s flat and consists of extremely well-maintained doubletrack dirt trails (at least 3 ft wide). We’ll stop multiple times to discuss the history of the area. For those who wish to hike further, there is an excellent trail leaving from the end of our walk that can extend your exploration of the area.

We will start the walk at 1pm from the parking lot at the base of the Fort Ward Blakely Harbor Trail on Country Club Road. We should be finished with our outing by 3pm.

Transportation: Public buses on Bainbridge Island do not run on Saturdays and Sundays. Participants are welcome to drive and park the Fort Ward Blakely Harbor Trail on Country Club Rd. Hike leaders will offer shuttles from the Winslow if desired for folks taking the ferry from Seattle.
